Paid Summer Work Placements

Summer Jobs Programme

The Summer Jobs Programme gives young people aged 16–20 the opportunity to take part in a six-week paid work placement during the summer holidays.

The programme is designed to help you build confidence, improve your wellbeing and develop employability skills, while also receiving ongoing support from a dedicated youth worker throughout the programme.

It includes preparation, work experience and ongoing support, helping you feel more ready for the workplace while building your confidence and skills.

To apply through Spiral Skills as a delivery partner, you must be a resident of Lambeth.

What You’ll Take Part In

If you join the programme, you will take part in:

A preparation week
A week to help you get ready for your placement and prepare for the workplace.

Five weeks of paid work experience
You’ll take part in a paid work placement where you can gain real experience and develop new skills.

Regular support from a youth worker
You’ll receive support from a youth worker during your placement to help guide and support you throughout the programme.

A final wrap-up and celebration event
At the end of the programme, all participants will come together for a celebration event to reflect on their experience.

How the programme Works?

Step 1: Apply & Get Registered (March – May)

Register your interest in the Summer Jobs Programme.

Applications will be reviewed to check that you meet the eligibility criteria.

If eligible, you will be asked to complete a short survey and consent form.

Important:
The programme is being delivered as part of a research study, so everyone who registers will take part in the study.

50% of participants will be randomly selected to receive a work placement, while others may be offered additional support or services.

All participants will also be asked to take part in evaluation activities, such as surveys or interviews. Some of these may include voucher incentives as a thank you for taking part.

The programme is delivered across several stages.

Step 2: Selection & Preparation (June)

If you are selected for the programme, you will begin preparing for your placement.

You will take part in:

1:1 meeting with a youth worker
You’ll meet with a youth worker to talk about your career goals and placement preferences.

Right-to-work checks
We will complete the necessary right-to-work checks before your placement begins.

Randomised placement selection
Participants are randomly selected for work placements as part of the programme.

Pre-employment training (25 hours of workshops)
You will take part in workshops designed to prepare you for the workplace, helping you build confidence and develop key employability skills.

Step 4: Start Your Summer Job (July – August)

Participants will begin their paid work experience placement.

During this time, you will take part in:

  • 5 weeks of work experience

  • 5 hours per day, 5 days per week

  • 3 individual check-ins with a youth worker

This is your chance to gain real work experience, build new skills and grow your confidence in the workplace.

Step 3: Preparation Week (July)

Participants will take part in 25 hours of pre-employment workshops delivered by the local delivery partner.

During this week, you will:

  • Build workplace skills and confidence

  • Take part in career development activities

  • Meet programme staff and prepare for your work placement

You will also receive support and regular check-ins from a youth worker throughout the week.

Step 5: Complete the Programme & Celebration
