Supporting Futures in Tech

Spiral Skills attended an exciting event in partnership with KX Recruit & LIFT called "Futures in Tech!" at Google HQ in St Pancras, a whole-day event dedicated to creating opportunities for 18- to 25-year-olds in the tech and digital sectors. With this aim in mind, we called on our young leaders, mentees, and past programme attendees to join the day and learn how they could excel in this emerging sector.

It was an insightful day in the digital world! I learned from and questioned experts, and I left feeling confident about applying the knowledge to my current job role and future job search!
— Young Attendee

Our highlight was the keynote talk with Thomas Harwell, who shared his journey from being a teacher in the USA to Head of Talent Engagement and Diversity Recruitment, managing the EMEA area for global tech group Google. He also interviewed three Google employees on their journeys, and the biggest takeaway was that some of these were non-traditional routes into tech.

Throughout the day, the young people rotated through three rooms: Find your career goals, Career Speed networking with industry professionals, and a Digital Skills Workshop, with plenty of time to network between sessions with companies recruiting for programmes, apprenticeships and jobs.

The first session was inspiring and interactive. It included polls, live questions, and resources to refine career goals, CVs, and job applications. The second session was speed networking with professionals in various tech roles, from a software engineer at Spotify to a co-founder of Somalis in Tech. During the final session, the speaker shared tools and tips on all things "presenting", from how to prepare slide decks to how to speak and present themselves physically if presenting on stage, all essential skills needed to excel in their future careers.

Thank you, Google, KX Recruit and LIFT, for a fantastic day!
