Spiral Changemakers Are Shaping the National Youth Strategy

The Government is developing a new ten-year National Youth Strategy, a plan to face the challenges young people are dealing with today and build a future where every young person has the chance to thrive.

This time, youth lead the charge.

In partnership with Ecosystem Coldharbour, our Changemakers Daryl, Abdoul, and Simeon led a powerful focus group with Helen Hayes MP, diving into what young people in Brixton are really experiencing.

Hosted by Alex Cameron and Kamika Nathan of CHIPS in Angell Town, the session covered the real, raw issues: fear of gang grooming, lack of job opportunities, and the breakdown of community. No filters. Just truth.

These young leaders didn’t just share problems, they pointed to what’s needed: safety, opportunity, and a system that actually listens.

Spiral was proud to be part of the launch of What’s the Matter? A bold, creative, and interactive violence reduction toolkit developed by Clare Douglas, co-created with our own Changemakers: Abdoul Nadmabi, Josua Eyakwere, Demetri Addison, and Jhemar Jonas. It was dynamic, youth-led, and rooted in lived experience.

The launch brought together an inspiring mix of violence reduction practitioners, community leaders, parents, and young people all in one space, sharing ideas, stories, and strategies. Real conversations happened. Tough topics were tackled head-on. And through it all, our Changemakers helped set the tone with their honesty, passion, and drive.

The toolkit itself is packed with practical, accessible resources that can taken straight into sessions with young people. But what we gained went beyond tools.

Our team walked away with new connections, fresh insight, and real momentum. Most importantly, we left reminded of this truth: when young people are empowered to lead, change becomes possible and powerful.
